One of the most common questions we hear from families is: "Is MBBS abroad really cheaper than private MBBS in India?"

The short answer is yes — often significantly cheaper. But the full picture is more nuanced than a simple comparison of tuition fees. Hidden costs, capitation fees, living expenses, and return on investment all need to be factored in.

In this post, we break down the complete cost of private MBBS in India vs MBBS abroad — honestly, transparently, and with real numbers — so you can make a fully informed decision.

First, Let Us Understand the Indian MBBS Landscape

In 2025-26, there are approximately 1.18 lakh MBBS seats available across 780 medical colleges in India. Of these, roughly 55,000 are government seats — affordable, prestigious, and fiercely competed for by 22+ lakh NEET aspirants every year.

That means only about 5% of NEET aspirants secure a government seat. The remaining 95% are left with two choices: private MBBS in India, or MBBS abroad.

This post is for those 95%.

The True Cost of Private MBBS in India

Private MBBS in India typically costs between ₹50 lakhs and ₹1.2 crores for the full course. But what many families do not know upfront is how the costs are structured:

•       Capitation Fee (Donation): ₹20 to ₹80 lakhs — paid upfront, non-refundable, often demanded in cash. Not disclosed officially.

•       Annual Tuition Fee: ₹8 to ₹15 lakhs per year × 5.5 years = ₹44 to ₹82 lakhs.

•       Hostel and Mess: ₹1.5 to ₹3 lakhs per year.

•       Miscellaneous (books, equipment, exam fees): ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh per year.

Total realistic cost of private MBBS in India: ₹70 lakhs to ₹1.3 crores. For most families, this requires multiple education loans, mortgaged property, or dipping into retirement savings.

The True Cost of MBBS Abroad

MBBS abroad at NMC and WHO approved universities in countries like Russia, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Vietnam typically costs significantly less. Here is a realistic breakdown:

•       No capitation fee. Zero. Admission is purely on NEET score and eligibility.

•       Annual Tuition Fee: ₹3 to ₹6 lakhs per year × 6 years = ₹18 to ₹36 lakhs.

•       Hostel and Food: ₹1 to ₹2 lakhs per year (Indian mess available in most university cities).

•       Travel (to and from India annually): ₹50,000 to ₹80,000 per year.

•       Miscellaneous (visa, insurance, books, personal expenses): ₹1 to ₹2 lakhs total.

Total realistic cost of MBBS abroad: ₹30 to ₹45 lakhs — all-inclusive, no hidden charges, no surprises.

What About the Degree — Is It Equally Valid?

This is the most important question parents ask — and the answer is yes, with one condition.

A student who does MBBS abroad from an NMC and WHO approved university is eligible to practice in India after clearing the NExT exam (National Exit Test). This is the same exam that all MBBS graduates — whether from India or abroad — must clear to practice medicine in India.

In other words: an MBBS from Russia, Kazakhstan, or Georgia — from an NMC approved university — carries the same licensing pathway as an MBBS from a private college in India. The degree is recognised. The pathway is identical.

The Questions Families Must Ask Before Deciding

Before making any decision, ask yourself — and the consultancy you speak with — these questions:

•       Is the university NMC approved and does it appear in the WHO World Directory of Medical Schools?

•       Is the total fee — including tuition, hostel, food, and travel — given to you in writing?

•       What is the NExT / FMGE pass rate of students from this university?

•       Does the consultancy have a documented MoU with the university — or are they just a middleman?

•       What support is provided after admission — during the 6 years of study and for NExT preparation?

Making the Right Decision for Your Family

MBBS abroad is not the right choice for everyone — but for a student with a NEET score of 350 to 500, whose family cannot afford ₹75 lakhs to ₹1.3 crore for a private seat in India, it is genuinely the most rational, financially sound, and medically credible path forward.

At Global Medical Admissions, we only work with NMC approved universities where we have documented MoUs. We give you the complete fee in writing — tuition, hostel, everything. No surprises, ever.
